Interoperability and Test Activities

The Moonv6 project has two primary componenets. One is the lab-based testing of vendor products that examines specific aspects of IPv6 deployment testing and compiles the findings to help industry better understand the state of IPv6. The other aspect is that Moonv6 is an overlay network on which applications can be shared and end to end testing can take place.

Base Specification Interoperability

Each device that implements IPv6 should conform to several base specifications. Interoperability testing can occur by passing data traffic between nodes with ICMP, TCP, and UDP. Core IPv6 functionality items such as address autoconfiguration, duplicate address detection, path MTU and fragmentation, mulitple prefixes and network renumbering, and redirect functions will be validated.

Routing

Routing interoperability testing will be performed on IPv6 capable routers within and between various sites. In addition to the applicable base specification tests, router testings can also include RIPng, BGP4+, and OSPFv3.

Mobility

Mobility tests will validate the ability of home agents, mobile nodes, and correspondent nodes to correctly interoperate in a mobile IPv6 environment. For the purposes of these interoperability tests, mobility refers to mobile node to correspondent node communication, and mobile node to mobile node communication.

Common Network Applications

Building upon the foundation created from successful configuration and testing in the first three categories, the Moonv6 network architecture should facilitate the use of common network services. Primary services such as DNS, NFS, web servers, and general business/personal applications (i.e. SSH, FTP, web browsing, streaming media, video conferencing, and network gaming) will be tested for IPv6 enablement.

Network Robustness & Security

Once a stable network has been implemented and network services are available, advanced scenerio testing will be conducted to determine network resiliency (via convergence testing) and network security (via hacking, DoS attacks, Red Teaming).
